Adoro wines is a relatively new South African wine company formed in 2004. It was formed by winemaker Ian Naudé and viticulturist Lucas de Kock who met whilst working for a famous Stellenbosch winery. They do not own their own vineyards but have close working relationships with high quality grape growers who supply their grapes. The grapes for this wine are sourced from in Swartland where the warm climate allows the growers to fully ripen their grapes (the 2009 vintage came form the Riebeecksig Estate 2009). The residual sugar is 55 g/L, so it is not the sweetest of wines, but very good it is too.
Adoro Wines is one of the top producers of blended wines in South Africa. Winemaker Ian Naudé has been instrumental in establishing brands such as Linton Park and Dornier, and in the process, earned himself a reputation as one of SA's leading blending specialists. Adoro, in Latin, means "to adore", and the name represents the passion and commitment of the team to produce truly South African styled wines. Through blending, the winemaker has an opportunity to combine the quality of the soil and grape, with his wine making skill, to create a uniquely styled wine. In the case of Adoro, the focus is on combining the best qualities of New World wines, with the classic elegance and complexity of Old World wines. South Africa is blessed with such diverse climates and soil types across its winegrowing regions that it presents a blending specialist, such as Ian, with the opportunity to acquire the best grapes, from the best winegrowing areas across the country, to create his wines from. Each selection of varietal (cultivar) is harvested and vinified individually, providing Ian with a multitude of different styles and flavours to craft each wine according to its unique style. Using this method of blending results in a consistent style, although the components and the percentage of each, may vary from vintage to vintage. The philosophy, therefore, is to use the style as starting point, and then, to take what each vintage offers, to create the wine. This philosophy is applied to blending single varietal (cultivars) from different regions, as well as blending different varietals (cultivars) from different regions.
