Francois Parent Fremiets Volnay Premier Cru 2006
A mature red Burgundy - what a treat! All too often these great examples of Pinot Noir are drunk before they reach their prime. Yet here, in François Parent's exemplary Volnay Premier Cru, the patient years of cellaring have been done for you. Full-bodied, rich red Pinot Noir, cherry red with garnet edges and with mature forest fruits, spices and an earthy minerality. Rounded and supple with an evolved spicy complexity. Even die-hard New World Pinot Noir fans acknowledge that the most classic expression of this noble grape comes from Burgundy's Côte d'Or. Volnay produces wines that are "tender, 'lacey' a lighter red with a soft fruit scent, all harmony and delight" (Hugh Johnson). That's an apt description of François Parent's wine from the Premier Cru vineyard 'Fremiets', especially the well balanced and charming 2006 vintage. The original Domaine Parent was founded in 1750 and its wines served in America's White House to President Thomas Jefferson. The estate was split in 1999, with François using his third of the 15 hectares to make wines under his own name.
