Maiano is certified organic and is a family owned historic property in Chianti. The estate is the classic Tuscan postcard: 55 hectares of gentle rolling hills of vine (the so called colline dolci), interspersed with Cypress trees and olive groves, and an agroturismo that serves up local food and provides lodging (and a pool ; ).
Run by the Nigi family, the estate's founder, Gianfranco Nigi, helped pioneer organic farming in the region back in 1984, and established Tenuta Maiano in 2000. Located west of Chianti Classico, the soils in Montespertoli are based more on clay and limestone as opposed to the galestro pebble-topped clay soils which characterize the Classico region. The more calcareous soils of Montespertoli yield wines that are ready for immediate enjoyment: fresh, lively and perfectly balanced.
