| ALSACE Sheltered by the Voges mountains from oceanic influences, the Alsace region has almost the lowest rainfall in France (400-500mm/year), and is lucky to have a semi- continental climate, which is hot, dry and sunny., even though Alsace is one of the most Northerly wine growing areas in France. The vineyards are sited on the foothills of the Voges mountains at an altitude of between 200 and 400 metres. The vines are trained on high wires, to ensure they receive as much sun exposure as possible, and the grapes have a slow and extended ripening period. The result is elegant and complex aromatic wines. Unlike the rest of France, where the wines are named according to the area they come from, those of Alsace are named after the grape varieties they are made from. For example, Gewurtztraminer, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Gris. These wines, with their purity of fruit and low tannin levels, are the perfect match for a variety of Asian cuisine. |
