| Loire The Loire region is home to the longest river in France, The Loire River. It is also one of the most varied wine regions in the country, producing red, white rosé, sweet, dry and sparkling wines. Most wines are made from a single grape variety, rather than a blend. Its most famous whites are Sancerre and Pouilly Fume, and its reds are known more for the lightness and delicacy, rather than for their weight and longuevity. There are also over twenty different appellations in the region, and they include Sancerre, Pouilly Fume, Muscadet, Anjou-Samur and Touraine. The two main white grape varieties are Sauvignon and Chenin Blanc, the latter responsible for some delicious dessert wines, as well as fresh crisp whites. The red varieties are Gamay and Cabernet Franc. Loire reds, being light and delicate, are a good match with with Tuna, while Muscadet from the western end of the Loire is a fantastic match for shellfish, and many of the other Loire whites also go very well with all seafood. |
