Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is the red grape which makes  Burgundy.  It is planted throughout the world, prefering a cool climate.  New Zealand has greatly increased its plantings of this elegant variety in recent years, and makes some very fine Pinot Noir wines, as does Chile.    Its main characteristics are: Strawberries, black cherry, maybe a touch of spice and a gamey richness with the occasional hint of rotting vegetables.  It has a gentle acidity, is low in tannins, and lighter in colour than other reds.
