| Rhône The Rhóne valley contains more AC's than any other French wine growing region, second only to Bordeaux, and around 90% of its wines are red. The region is divided into two areas, the Northern Rhóne, and the Southern Rhóne, which are geographically and climatically very different, each with distinct styles of wine. The Northern Rhône is most prestigious region in the Rhóne, boasting the appellations of Crozes hermitages and Cótes Rotie. The vineyards are sited on near vertical slopes, and the reds are made mainly from Syrah , whilst the grape varieties used for whites are Viognier, Marsanne and Rousanne. Viognier is responsible for the delicious aromatic and rich white wine from Condrieu. The Southern Rhône is the most important area in terms of quantity. It also contains the appellations of Cotes du Rhóne, and Cótes du Rhóne Villages, as well as the renown appellation of Chateauneau du Pape. The most important grape varieities here are Grenache, Cinsault and Mourvèdre, and for the whites, Marsanne, Rousanne and Grenache Blanc. Wines tend to be a blend. |
