PRODUCER DETAILS: In 1995 Niels and Penny Verburg returned to their native South Africa following many years making wine around the world. Today they make wine as naturally as possible following the philosophy that good wine is made in the vineyard.
The Verburg and Meyer families set up Luddite Wines in 2000 on a slope of the Houw Hoek mountain outside the village of Bot River. The farm is 17 hectares of which 7 are under vine and 1 hectare is planted with olives. " We farm as naturally as possible and the vines are not irrigated, good wine is made in the vineyard. Grapes varietals planted are Shiraz, Mouverdre, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chenin. We use all 3 red varieties in the Saboteur range, although percentages change every year"
In Neil's words, the Saboteur is all about "bold fruit, good spice and soft tannins" - the blend for the 2015 is 77% Shiraz, 11% Mourvedre, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon and (for the first time) 3% Cabernet Franc. The wine was aged for 12 months, 50% in new French oak.
