Even die-hard New World Pinot Noir fans acknowledge that the most classic expression of this noble grape comes from Burgundy's Côte d'Or. Volnay produces wines that are "tender, 'lacey' a lighter red with a soft fruit scent, all harmony and delight" (Hugh Johnson). That's an apt description of François Parent's wine from the Premier Cru vineyard 'Fremiets', especially the well balanced and charming 2006 vintage. The original Domaine Parent was founded in 1750 and its wines served in America's White House to President Thomas Jefferson. The estate was split in 1999, with François using his third of the 15 hectares to make wines under his own name.
