Robert’s jazz career first started whilst studying Graphic Design in Bristol.
He played with a variety of local bands, and often appeared at the famous
‘Old Duke’ where he regularly sat in with visiting stars such as Danny
Moss, Roy Williams, Colin Smith and Brian Lemon.
On graduating in 1986, he was approached to play with The Pasadena
Roof Orchestra, on the recommendation of NYJO boss Bill Ashton. Thus
followed a decade of international and national touring, travelling much of
Europe, the USA and the UK, which Robert found invaluable - nurturing his
early talent and developing his rich sound.
Robert has worked across different musical genres; In 1999 Robert was
asked to play on a session by Bryan Ferry, for the album ‘As Time goes
by’. This led to further touring and recording with Bryan, appearing on his
albums ‘Frantic’, ‘Avonmore’, and the ‘Jazz Age’, as well as collaborating
on the soundtrack to Baz Luhrman’s ‘Great Gatsby’ and Sky TV’s ‘Babylon
Berlin’ series. His association with Bryan continues today.
As well as Bryan, Robert has toured with Rufus Wainwright, Motown
legends, The Four Tops and the Temptations, and was also in the resident
live band at the 2015 London Palladium show: ‘Frank Sinatra, the Man and
his Music’. He has also played on many other Film and TV sessions as
well as Orchestral dates with the John Wilson Orchestra, The CBSO, the
BBC Concert Orchestra, the RTE Concert Orchestra and the Royal
Philharmonic Concert Orchestra.
Jazz remains Robert’s passion. He has worked with many bands from the
British jazz scene, working with The Great British Jazz Band, The BBC Big
Band, the Humphrey Lyttelton Band and the Alan Barnes’ Octet. Robert
has also put together an all star big band, in tribute to Gerry Mulligan’s
Concert Jazz Band: a 13 piece group which included some of the country’s
finest musicians. He currently leads his own Quartet and Quintet and
continues to be a welcome addition to many of the UK’s jazz festivals.
Robert has released 2 CDs under his own name: Tight Lines and Flow.
