Add To Your WishlistChateau Capbern St Estephe 2019 - en primeur

The 2019 Château Capbern from Saint-Estèphe should be on everyone's en primeur buying list this year..... an estate well on its way to ascension into a different league of winemaking, under Laurent Dufau.

From the same team as renowned Calon Ségur, this is a glorious, fruit-laden Saint Estèphe. Described as "powerful and impactful", and by James Suckling, as "gorgeous".

The 33 hectares of vines are hand-harvested and the 2019 is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The wine will be aged for 18 months in 60% new oak barrels.

Silky, yet firm tannins supporting chocolatey, damson, tar notes

"Gorgeous young sample with wonderful blue fruit and spices, as well as a nice overlay of pretty wood"

James Suckling

Critic, 93-94 points

Formerly known as Capbern Gasqueton, this Cru Bourgeois Saint Estèphe estate has been in the same family for 10 generations. The same family that owns 3ème Cru Classé Calon Ségur. It lies in one of the finest parts of the appellation, between Phelan Ségur and Meyney, and every aspect is given Grand Cru care. Hand picking of the 41 hectares of vines, with ageing in top quality oak, one third new, all adds up to the exceptional quality. This vintage has gathered many top scores from both Decanter magazine, James Suckling and James Leve. Rightly so, too. Two thirds Cabernet with the same in new oak, it’s “gourmet and full of chocolate, damson and tar. High drama in this vintage” (Decanter). Definitely one to cellar for a few years.

Dufau is credited with the rapid progress made at Calon-Ségur, under the same ownership as Capbern since 2012. Calon is challenging Montrose and Cos d'Estournel as the leading wines of Saint-Estèphe and each new vintage of Capbern shows some of this ambition too.  James Suckling describes the 2019 as "gorgeous" and "better than the 2018", awarding it 93-94 points."
