Domaine Rene Jolly is a family-owned estate in the Aube departement which dates back to the 18c. It is situated almost as far south as it's possible to be while still remaining in the champagne region. In fact, it is much nearer to Chablis in the northern part of l'Yonne than it is to the Montagne de Reims or the Cote des Blancs in the Reims/Epernay area, Because of its location, the area is mostly planted to Pinot Noir which ripens well on the south-facing clay-limestone slopes, with some Chardonnay on the stonier, better-drained soils Pinot Meunier is hardly grown in the area. Wine-making is tradititional but of a technically high standard and the resulting champagnes are elegant, complex, satisfying and benefit from a relatively long time ageing on their lees 'sur lattes' so they have a resemblance to vintage champagne and are not overly acidic or sharp in the mouth.
